Camping at Canyon Ferry Lake in Montana

Last year for Independence Day I took the boys to Canyon Ferry Lake and camped at Hellgate Campground in Helena, Montana. I am sure your thoughts are how I came across this place and what made me pick it. Well, it was the last campsite available for a holiday weekend so I went with it.

I figured there was a lake and a place to camp. What more did we need? Absolutely nothing. Well, maybe a few more biting fish. I took my paddle board and enjoyed some time out on the water each day. The lake was right off our campsite which was great.

We spent each day in the water. Swimming, floating, and fishing. I am sure by the looks you can tell it was rough on us.

We didn't catch much fish from the shore. It did seem like those in boats were doing much better than us. The campground had all the amenities we needed. Let me add in that we tent camp. The campground was in high desert so not a lot of trees. I would suggest bringing some type of canopy for shade. I had a large umbrella that we put over our picnic table.

Spent some time out of the water trying to whip these boys in some horseshoes.

Then we spent the evenings walking around the area. Every time I am in Montana I see bald eagles and it never gets old. They are the most beautiful birds. I had one fly right over me on the paddle board and about fell off trying to take a picture of it.

Since the fishing was great for us we went a little north to find some. I was able to get our on the water and do some fly fishing. Fly fishing calms me. It is an art and definitely takes practice. I will add that out of state fishing licenses are not cheap. Know where you will fish before you buy and be aware of the state regulations.

Montana is incredible. I love that it is only a few hours from me because I can't get enough of this state every time I am there.
