Elk Encounter at Hardware Ranch

I know everyone does not want to hike miles into the woods in hopes to come across an elk. Hardware Ranch is an amazing location to visit during the winter months where anyone can have that elk encounter. I often have to find things to keep us busy during the cold months in Idaho so we don't go stir crazy. Sometimes that means finding things to do until the ski resorts open.

Hardware Ranch is just north of Salt Lake City, Utah in Blacksmith Fork Canyon. The ranch started in the 1950's as a place for elk research and that research continues to this day. It is a beautiful drive through the mountains. The winter season runs from approximately December-February. There is a large, open meadow that during those months the ranch feeds 500-600 Rocky Mountain Elk. Seeing that many elk in one location is not only rare but mesmerizing.

There is a visitor center that sits just across the road from the meadow. The visitor center does have restrooms since there is not much when it comes to stops near that location. In the visitor center you can get more information about the wildlife in the area. I will not sugar coat the weather or temperatures during those months. Dress warm and I mean warm. The low in December averages 12 degrees. We dressed in layers, gloves, and brought blankets. I think the worst part was our feet, they were freezing. So warm boots and thick socks are a must, I would even bring some foot and hand warmers.

When we went we were able to go up to the visitor center for tickets for a sleigh ride through the elk. The best experience. The horses were just as captivating to me. Last year the sleigh rides were closed due to COVID and their website does not currently say if they will be having them for the 2021-2022 season. Once you have your ticket, you head down to the meadow to get in line. That was probably the worst part of the experience. Standing in the cold. We got their about mid-morning, so if you were to arrive at opening you could reduce your wait time in line.

The guides on the sleigh ride were very informative as well. They will answer questions regarding these elk and the ranch. You will see bull elk and cow elk of all sizes. There is an annual Elk Festival that starts the winter season which I was not aware of but would love to visit. At the festival they have elk calling classes which if you have not heard an elk bugle in person, you haven't lived.

Most of all the boys had a great time. It was like nothing they had ever seen. For more information visit the Hardware Ranch website https://wildlife.utah.gov/discover/hardware-ranch.html
