Hiking The Narrows at Zion National Park

If you have not visited Zion National Park then add it to your list. There are numerous locations to visit throughout the park and just outside. My best friend and I spent a long weekend during the month of June and it was incredible. Her and I are notorious for picking adventures that push us to our limits, which is almost always decided over margaritas.

We booked an Airbnb in St. George and drove to our designated destination each day. The Narrows was hands down one of our favorite spots. This is a hike that you need to be prepared for if you want to do it right and get through the full hike. It is critical to check the weather going into this hike and I definitely suggest avoiding monsoon season. There have been drownings in there and there is only one way for the water to flow so there is no getting out of the canyon in time.

We did a little research going in and made some last minute decisions based on park traffic. The route to parking was limited due to COVID restrictions and the park busses were not running at that time. People were lining up at 3 am just to get to the parking lot and that wasn’t guaranteed. We felt being exhausted would take away from our hike, so we last minute booked a shuttle with Zion Adventures. This was well worth the money. The bus shuttled us right up to the drop off and we included their waterproof shoes and a walking stick. They gave great service and were very informative on the hike. Now that we have done it, we wouldn’t go without.

It is really up to the hiker to decide how far they want to go in. The rocks are slippery and the first half mile I saw another hiker slip and fall. So definitely wear clothes that you can get wet and can move comfortably in. We went in about 3.5 miles and went in areas that were chest deep. We decided to turn around at the spot where we were to swim through, there was no hiking around it. The Narrows is not for the adventurer looking to be out alone in nature. It is a very busy hike but I in no way felt like it took away from our experience. The further in we went the lighter the crowds got.

Make sure when you go that you decide to start early enough. If you shuttle they provide pick up options so you have to make sure you are back in plenty of time to catch the shuttle out.

Most importantly, do what you can that will make you enjoy this hike. Come prepared so you can take in the beautiful scenery. Every place you look there is beauty. The pictures do not do it justice, we were in awe of the God's creation in front of us. Encountering the outdoors never ceases to amaze me.
